An afterburner for mixing combustible gas and air includes a circular mixing chamber 1 with open ends being an inlet 2 and outlet 3. The combustible gas is introduced into the mixing chamber 1 at the inlet 2 and air is added to the mixing chamber along the circumference of the mixing chamber through openings 8 in the wall of the chamber and substantially tangentially to the mixing chamber wall from an air supply chamber 6 to be mixed with the combustible gas. A velocity is imparted to the air entering the mixing chamber by a fan in the air supply chamber. The mixture is discharged from the mixing chamber outlet 3. An overflow chamber 7 which has an outlet and a damper 9 for the outlet is connected to the air supply chamber 6.
