<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization conversion illumination optical system having an excellent separation characteristics for s-polarized light and p-polarized light, and improved brightness and contrast, and to provide a projection display apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: Polarization separation is performed by a polarization separation function part 64 of a wire grid polarization beam splitter 42 taking advantage of the characteristic that the light irradiated from a lamp light source 17 and reflected by an elliptical reflector 18 is dark around the center thereof. Also, p-polarized light that passes through the wire grid polarization beam splitter is polarization-converted and converted to be convergent light by a polarization separation non-function part 63 provided in the center portion of the wire grid polarization beam splitter.
