摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus to control an internal combustion engine capable of maintaining stable combustion by preventing adhesion of carbon on an ignition plug of a deactivated cylinder due to a cylinder deactivation operation with a relatively simple method. <P>SOLUTION: When a cylinder deactivation operation is performed, a cylinder deactivation counter CCSPLUG calculates a count value corresponding to an integrated value of a deactivation time of a cylinder. When the value of the cylinder deactivation counter CCSPLUG is equal to or larger than a two-cylinder deactivation inhibition threshold CCS2PLUGH, a two-cylinder deactivation operation is inhibited, and when the value of the cylinder deactivation counter CCSPLUG is equal to or larger than a three-cylinder deactivation inhibition threshold CCSPLUGH, the two-cylinder deactivation operation and a three-cylinder deactivation operation are inhibited (S51-S54). The count value of the cylinder deactivation counter CCSPLUG is held after an engine 1 stops.
