<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having high display qualities. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element includes: a first substrate, which includes a first electrode and a first alignment layer subjected to an aligning treatment to develop a pretilt angle of 40° or more and 65° or less; a second substrate, which is disposed oppositely and parallel to the first substrate and includes a second electrode and a second alignment layer subjected to an aligning treatment to develop a pretilt angle of 1° or more and 15° or less; and a liquid crystal layer, which is disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, contains a chiral agent and exhibits twist alignment. When a revolving direction of the twist of liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer containing no chiral agent is defined as a first revolving direction, the chiral agent imparts revolving property to the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer in a second revolving direction opposite to the first revolving direction. In the liquid crystal layer, an electric field in a thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer can be generated by applying a voltage to the first electrode and the second electrode. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
