Apparatus and methods for flow cytometry sex sorting of animal sperm

A flow cytometry system for sorting sperm in particular with at least two different characteristics includes a fluid delivery system for delivering a fluid containing the particles, a flow cytometry apparatus for receiving the fluid, forming the fluid into a fluid stream, orienting the particles within the stream and using flow cytometry to classify the particles according to the characteristics, and a sorting system for sorting the particles according to the classification and a sorting strategy to provide at least one population containing desired particles. The system includes an analog to digital converter synchronously sampling a time-varying analog output from the flow cytometry apparatus and providing an output including digital information corresponding to the time-varying analog output, both signals being indicative of the respective characteristics of the particles, and a digital signal processor analyzing and classifying the digital information and providing a sorting signal to the sorting system as a function of the analysed and classified digital information.
