<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a more compact optical switch element faster in response characteristic and capable of operation in a broad band permitting multi-wavelength processing. <P>SOLUTION: An optical switch comprises at least an optical element 100 configured of a matrix 101 in which a plurality of crystallites 102a to 102d of a semiconductor is dispersed and a control light irradiating unit 103 that irradiates the optical element 100 with control light 111. The matrix 101 is configured from a material having a greater band gap energy than the semiconductor making up the crystallites 102a to 102d. The plurality of crystallites 102a to 102d decreases in grain diameter toward the incoming side of the control light 111 along the incoming direction of the control light 111 (the y axis direction) and is uniform in grain diameter in a plane perpendicular to the incoming direction of the control light 111. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
