A paper surface smoothing device for a paper making machine comprises: a lower conveyance belt (33) for conveying wet paper (124) placed on the conveyance surface of the lower conveyance belt (33); a wet-paper sensor (60) for detecting the passage of the leading edge of the wet paper (124); and a calender section (4) having a pressing roller (41) capable of being, according to the value of an output from the wet paper sensor (60), displaced between a pressing position and a retracted position, the pressing position being the position at which the pressing roller (41) grips the wet paper (124) between pressing roller (41) and the lower conveyance belt (33), the retracted position being the position at which the pressing roller (41) is separated from the wet paper (124).
