Proximity of a user to the detector (102) is detected (208) based on the amplitude of a first part of the generated signal within a predetermined time interval being greater than a predetermined first threshold and the amplitude of a second part of the generated signal within the predetermined time interval being less than a second predetermined threshold, the first predetermined threshold being greater than the second predetermined threshold, and based on a rate of change of the amplitude of the generated signal within the predetermined time interval being greater than a predetermined third threshold.
