A refiner plate 130 for a mechanical refiner of lignocellulose material includes a refining surface on a substrate which is adapted to face a refining surface of an opposing refiner plate. The refining surface includes bars and grooves between the bars and the bars have at least a radially outer section 136 having a holdback angle of at least 30 degrees at the outer periphery of the bars. The bars each include a sidewall having an irregular surface 146, 148 in the outer section, the irregular surface including protrusions extending outwardly from the sidewall towards a sidewall on an adjacent bar. The radially inward section of the bars may have sidewalls which are smooth, the bars may be curved longitudinally with a reversal of curvature as the bar goes from the inner radial portion of the bar to the outer peripheral portion of the bar, or the bars may comprise straight sections made up of an inner zone portion 132 with a holdback angle of less than 15 degrees, a middle portion zone 134 with a holdback angle between 15 and 45 degrees, and an outer zone 136 with a holdback angle of greater than 45 degrees.
