PURPOSE: An apparatus for encoding/decoding a multi-viewpoint depth image and method thereof are provided to obtain the encoding efficiency of a multi-viewpoint depth image. CONSTITUTION: A color image encoding unit(212) encodes a color image. A background map generating unit(220) generates a background map through the information of the encoded color image. The background map is classified into a background area and a moving area. A depth image encoding unit(214) excludes the background area from the depth image. The depth image encoding unit encodes only the moving area.
