<p>A gas treatment apparatus e.g. a gas filter, suitable for use in an air purifying apparatus for the production of breathable air, comprises a catalyst comprising palladium and iron oxide and a source of a volatile nitrogen-containing compound. The apparatus is useful in gas masks, emergency escape hoods and static air treatment apparatus. The catalyst is preferably made by precipitating a mixed oxide and hydroxide containing iron and palladium is from an acid solution comprising soluble iron and palladium compounds (preferably iron and palladium nitrates). The iron oxide and palladium may be supported on a porous solid support material. The source of a volatile nitrogen-containing compound may be an absorbent material impregnated with an amine or ammonia, and is preferably activated carbon impregnated with triethylenediamine (TEDA). A method of treating air using the apparatus is also outlined.</p> |
