[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a cross-regenerator under-fired coke oven air is supplied to the regenerators through flues 25 situated between the supporting platform 11 and the regenerator sole flues 24, and in communication through valve-controlled ports 28 arranged along the median line of the battery with the basement space 45, which in turn is in communication with the alleyways 44 and the atmosphere by openings at the sides of the battery. The oven shown is fired by rich gas supplied from a main 20 and distributing - pipes 22, and heating - walls on opposite sides of alternate ovens are connected by cross-over flues 16. Each heating-unit of the battery is associated with four regenerator chambers 13 (each divided by a cross wall 27), and the corresponding sets of four flues 25 are connected together at their outer ends by cross passages 26 and communicate with the sole flues 24 by ports controlled by valves 30, which are closed when the corresponding sole flues are conveying waste gases to the main 32, and are opened when they are conveying air to the regenerator. The reversing device shown in Fig. 3 comprises a bifurcated passage leading from a pair of flues 24 and a counterweighted valve 38, which is connected by linkwork 36 to a pair of valves 30, the arrangement being such that when the valve 38 is open the valves 30 are closed and vice versa.
