Provided is a light-emitting ceramic such as a wavelength-converting ceramic or radiation-to-light-converting ceramic that emits light when impinged upon by radiation or light and has short emitted light decay times. The light-emitting ceramic is produced by heat-treating a ceramic having a pyrochlore compound represented by ABOW (wherein A comprises at least one selected from a group consisting of La, Y, Gd, Yb and Lu and 0-5 mole% of Bi; B is at least one selected from a group consisting of Sn, Zr and Hf, and W is a positive number for maintaining electrical neutrality) as the main component in a reducing atmosphere.
