The present invention relates to a method for in vitro predicting the likelihood of an onset of sepsis, by quantitatively detecting in at least one biological sample of a patient a plurality of endogenous sepsis predictive target compounds having a molecular weight of less than 1500 Dalton comprising the steps of: selecting said compounds from the group of bile acids, measuring concentration, level or amount of each individual endogenous sepsis predictive target compound of said plurality of compounds in said sample, establishing a quantitative pattern; and using and storing the obtained set of values in a database. Calibrating said values by comparing clinically confirmed sepsis-positive and/or clinically confirmed sepsis-negative reference parameters, and comparing said measured values in the sample with the calibrated values, in order to assess whether the patient is likely to develop a sepsis or not. |
