An engine-generator comprises is disclosed comprising a generator 13 and an internal combustion engine 14 coupled to the generator 13 such that operation of the internal combustion engine 14 will generate electricity via the generator 13. A control system incorporating a misfire detection system 5 is provided, the misfire detection system 5 being arranged to monitor engine rotation speed in order to detect a misfire event during operation of the engine 1 wherein in response to an indication of the misfire event the control system initiates a safety mode of the engine-generator. The control system is capable of reacting to individual misfire events and provides sufficient sensitivity to enable use of a safety mode at an early detection stage. The safety mode can be used to switch off a misfiring cylinder and prevent damage to the engine generator. |
