PURPOSE: A portable terminal and a method for operating the same are provided to freely execute the inherent functions of the portable terminal related to the multimedia data during the function which controls the corresponding external device. CONSTITUTION: A wireless communication unit(110) transmits multimedia data to an external device. A display unit(151) displays a user interface image about the multimedia data during reproducing the multimedia through an external device. A user input unit(130) receives a user signal through the user interface image. A control unit(180) executes an application requested according to the user signal.
