Apparatus (9,42) connected to an e-mail server (48) is configured to accept information, e.g. user status information, event dates and times etc. from a user (1) which the server sends as an auto-reply message in response to request e-mails from other users (7,8) conforming to predetermined criteria, e.g. containing a certain character in the subject line of an e-mail sent to the server, the sender address being part of a specified group etc. The apparatus comprises a database for storing information regarding the service to be provided for the user, and a processor element operable to receive information from the user, e.g., in an e-mail sent to a predefined service configuration email address.
