[Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A shock-absorbing device comprises at least one rubber block united by adhesion, e.g. cementing or vulcanisation, on opposite sides to rigid elements in order to damp relative displacement of the elements by tension or compression of the rubber which is perforated at right-angles to the direction of stress, rigid plates being provided to contact with a progressively-increasing area of the block with increase in compression. As shown in Fig. 1 a centrally-perforated cylindrical block 1 is formed with flattened surfaces 3 vulcanized to metal plates 4 constituting the rigid elements, which have attachment bolts 5 and are formed integral with plates 7 so shaped that under compression the block is deformed as shown in broken lines. The plates 7 may extend over only a portion of the block when compressed. Several constructions are shown in which a plurality of blocks are arranged in series or parallel and are adapted when compressed to follow a predetermined deformation by the interposition of one or more shaped metal plates or by engaging suitably arranged plates. Fig. 9, for example, shows a device comprising superposed blocks 22, 23, 24 vulcanized to plates 26, 26, 27, 27a and adapted when compressed to engage downward extensions of the plate 27a. Fg. 13 shows the invention applied to a coupling opposite pairs of abutments 31, 32 being secured respectively to the driven and driving members and adjacent pairs being separated by a rubber block 33 surface bonded to plates having extensions 34 which control the deformation. |
