<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for producing a phosphonium BF<SB POS="POST">4</SB>salt substantially free of a halogen ion. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the phosphonium salt having a specific structure includes reacting a trialkylphosphine with a formaldehyde dialkyl acetal and boron trifluoride or a complex thereof. A trialkylphosphine in which 1C-8C alkyl is substituted is cited as the trialkylphosphine.
