<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of improving operability in operation of giving an instruction. <P>SOLUTION: The image reader comprises: an operation unit 5 which detects a user's instruction by user's operation; a transportation unit for transporting a medium to be read; a medium detection unit 4 for detecting the medium to be read; a reading unit for reading the medium to be read; an instruction detection unit for detecting the user's instruction by detection means different from the operation unit; and a control unit for executing control based on the user's instruction.
