The present invention relates to a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery and a lithium secondary battery provided with same. The cathode active material for the lithium secondary battery of the present invention includes a silicon and a silicon alloy made from at least two metals, each of the metals having no more than -23KJ/mol heat of mixing with the silicon. The cathode active material for the lithium secondary battery of the present invention has large volume and thus is useful for manufacturing a high-volume lithium secondary battery. Also, the cathode active material for the lithium secondary battery of the present invention has a very small silicon crystal phase, which results in little volume change of the cathode active material when charging/discharging, thereby providing superior cycling properties when applied to a battery.
