Organometallic compound (I) is new. Organometallic compound of formula (I) is new. M : Mo or W; L : substituted 2,2'-bipyridinyl-1,1'-diyl ligand of formula (II); either R 1> 6>-R 2> 3> : H, 1-12C alkyl, 3-12C cycloalkyl, aryl with 6-18 atoms, heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms, 1-12C alkyloxy, 3-12C cycloalkyloxy, 6-20C aryloxy, di-1-4C alkylamino, halo, NO 2, CN, trifluoromethyl or -COOR 1> 2>; or R 1> 6>+R 1> 7>, R 1> 7>+R 1> 8>, R 1> 8>+R 1> 9>, R 2> 3>+R 2> 2>, R 2> 2>+R 2> 1>, R 2> 1>+R 2> 0> : optionally saturated or aromatic ring; or R 1> 9>+R 2> 0> : optionally saturated or aromatic 5-8 membered ring; R 1> 2> : 1-12C alkyl, 3-12C cycloalkyl, aryl with 6-18 atoms or heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms; R 9>-R 1> 1> : aryl with 6-18 atoms, heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms (both substituted with upto 5 1-12C alkyl, 1-12C alkoxy, di-1-4C alkylamino, 3-12C (cycloalkyl)oxy, aryl with 6-18 atoms, heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms or halo), 1-12C alkyl or 3-12C cycloalkyl; X : N or CR 1> 3>; and R 1> 3> : 1-12C alkyl, 3-12C cycloalkyl, aryl with 6-18 atoms or heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms. Provided that at least one of the substituents R 9>-R 1> 1>comprises an aryl with 6-18 atoms or a heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms. Independent claims are also included for: (1) an alkylidyne complex of formula (III); (2) an adduct of (III) with a solvent comprising acetonitrile, benzonitrile, pivalonitrile, diethyl ether, diisopropyl ether, tert-butyl methyl ether, diphenyl ether, methoxybenzene, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, dimethoxyethane, and its use as catalyst for alkyne metathesis; (3) preparing (I); (4) carrying out alkyne metathesis reaction, comprising reacting (I) in presence of a metal salt; and (5) carrying out the alkyne metathesis reaction in presence of molecular sieves, where the use of molecular sieves leads to an increase in the reaction rate and/or the yield of the reaction product when compared with the alkyne metathesis reaction that is carried out in the absence of molecular sieves. R 1> 5> : 1-12C alkyl, 3-12C cycloalkyl, aryl with 6-18 atoms or heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms.
