PURPOSE: A speed measuring apparatus and a method for compensating a speed which is measured are provided to accurately and quickly offer a speed value. CONSTITUTION: A speed measuring apparatus comprises a GPS(Global Positioning System) part(210), an acceleration sensor part(220), and a compensation process part(230). The GPS part receives a satellite signal from a GPS satellite and creates GPS date which includes a position coordinate and transition speed data. The acceleration sensor part includes an acceleration sensor and creates sensor data which includes a transition speed and a gradient of road surface. The compensation process part compares current GPS data and the sensor data with previous GPS data and sensor data. The compensation process part applies the sensor date or the transition speed to a speed value which is measured according to whether the amount of change of the transition speed exists or not.
