<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for an ophthalmic solution or eye wash exhibiting excellent antiseptic stability without containing an antiseptic agent with no irritation to eye mucosa that can be used while contact lenses are fitted to a wearer. <P>SOLUTION: The composition is used for ocular instillation or eye washing and contains 1,2-octanediol, desirably contains a boric acid and/or borax.
