The method involves performing cyclic and/or acyclic data exchange among field devices (S1-S5) of a wireless fieldbus system and/or among the field devices and a gateway (G) to communicate with the system. Data transmission rate for communication with the system is determined. Acyclic data exchange in the system is performed through the gateway when a super ordinate process control network (PCN) is initiated. Another data transfer rate for communication with the fieldbus system is determined, where the latter transfer rate is greater than the former transfer rate. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a wireless fieldbus system in a process system, comprising a field bus interface.
