<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat pump type water heater which can wholly improve energy utilization efficiency and attain energy saving. <P>SOLUTION: The heat pump type water heater includes a heat pump unit A wherein a first heat exchanger 1, a compressor 2, a second heat exchanger 3 and an expansion valve 4 are connected by piping 5, a refrigerant is circulated in the piping, and a second heat exchanger 3 is provided in a hot water storage tank 6 to heat water in the hot water storage tank and produce hot water. The first heat exchanger 1 is installed in a sealed container (heat exchange tank 9) and an air compressor 12 for supplying high-pressure air to the heat exchanger 9 is provided. The heat pump unit A includes a third heat exchanger 13 for radiating heat of a gas within the heat exchange tank 9 and a cooling module provided with a cooling radiator 14, and the heat exchange tank 9 is connected with an air tank 18 by piping.
