Disclosed are a stereoscopic image data transmission device and a stereoscopic image data reception device which facilitate processing at a receiving side. A subtitle processing unit (133) converts two-dimensional image-use subtitle data generated at a subtitle generation unit (132) to stereoscopic image-use subtitle data corresponding to a transmitting format of stereoscopic image data supplied to a video encoder (113) from a data extraction unit (130). The stereoscopic image-use subtitle data possesses data of a left-eye subtitle and data of a right-eye subtitle. The stereoscopic image-use subtitle data is generated so that parallax is imparted between the left-eye subtitle and the right-eye subtitle. At the receiving side, on the basis of the stereoscopic image-use subtitle data, it is possible to easily generate display data of the left eye subtitle superimposed upon the left eye image data possessed by the stereoscopic image data and display data of the right eye subtitle superimposed upon the right eye image data possessed by the stereoscopic image data so as to facilitate processing.
