The device has a rack operating device (20) automatically releasing or retrieving a loading aid e.g. pallet, from a storage position in a storage rack. The device (20) has a load carrying attachment controller (24) with a position detecting device (22) detecting a position of the aid. The device (22) detects deviation of actual position from a reference position of the aid by distance measurement for outputting a deviation signal to the controller stopping a horizontal movement of a horizontally movable load carrying attachment when deviation signal is received. An independent claim is also included for a method for preventing an unintentional moving of a loading aid relative to a storage position in a storage rack.
