摘要 A display screen having (RGB) phosphor regions 230 maximizes light leaving the phosphor regions using a low refractive index gaseous, liquid or solid matter 260 disposed between the light-producing phosphor regions 230 and divider members 220 separating the phosphor regions. The low refractive index region 260 may be air, a polymer, a gel, or other material that has an index of refraction substantially less than the indices of refraction of the divider members 220 and phosphor regions 230. Laser scanned, e.g. laser-phosphor display (LPD), light emitting diode (LED), digital light processing (DLP) or other phosphor based display devices may form the display system. A transparent layer and colour filter layers, 210R, 210G, 210B may be provided. Stand-off support elements 465 may form a second low index of refraction region 460 defined by second, reflective layer 470 and transparent substrate 240; reflecting surface 471 serves to reflect emitted light 431 back to the viewer, enhancing screen brightness. Support elements 465 may be positioned randomly or adjacent to dividers 220 or phosphor regions 230. Dividing supports 220, 465 may be elongated strips.
