[Class 144 (ii)] A pneumatic tyre tread comprises a series of circumferential ribs 1, 2, 5 with transverse slits extending from the intervening grooves 3, 4 partially across the ribs. Along the median line of the tread, slits 6 in the rib 1 have outwardlyconvergent walls and curved bases merging into the axially-outer walls of the grooves 3. Alternating with the slits 6 are pairs of slits 9 which extend from the inner walls of the grooves 3 and present outwardly inclined walls 11 in the ribs 2. Mating with the slits 9, and extending from the outer walls of the ribs 2, are slits 12 whereby portions 15 of these ribs overhang the bases 13 of the slits 12. Similarly-overhanging , portions 24 are formed in the outermost ribs 5 by mating slits 16, 20. As shown, the slits extend into the tread beyond the bottoms of the grooves 3, 4.
