Phosphor particles of generally spherical shape have an average particle diameter of 5-50 µm and an average roundness of up to 0.3. The phosphor includes a garnet phase having formula: (A 1-x B x ) 3 C 5 O 12 wherein A is Y, Gd, or Lu , B is Ce, Nd, or Tb, C is Al or Ga, and 0.002 ‰¤ x ‰¤ 0.2.
