Disclosed is a process for the preparation of substituted 3-alkyl/arylsulfonyl and 3-sulfonylamido-quinoline-4-ones by conducting reaction in boiling diphenyl ether medium. Orthoether and sulfonyl acetate are subjected to reaction at boiling. Thereafter diphenyl ether is added to the reaction mixture, boiled, filtered, and precipitate prepared is purified.
