Disclosed is an internal combustion engine (1) provided with a blower (3) for blowing air, a combustion chamber (4) in which the air blown by the blower (3) and fuel are burnt to generate a drive force and from which exhaust gas is discharged, a supercharger (2) driven by the exhaust gas discharged from the combustion chamber (4), a denitrification device (10) having a catalyst for reducing nitrogen oxide in the exhaust gas discharged from the supercharger (2), and a burner unit (8) which is provided between the combustion chamber (4) and the supercharger (2) and which injects fuel to the exhaust gas introduced to the supercharger (2) to burn the fuel. Before starting the internal combustion engine (1), air blown by the blower (3) is discharged as combustion air from the combustion chamber (4).
