<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read an image while preventing image degradation. <P>SOLUTION: A contact image reading sensor 10 includes: a light receiving layer 15 that has a plurality of two-dimensionally arranged light receiving elements 16; a light transmissive protecting sheet layer 25 disposed on a surface of a side of the light receiving layer 15 where the light receiving elements 16 receive light; and a surface light source 20 that, when emitting light, increases components of the emitted light in a thickness direction of the protecting sheet layer 25 compared to diffused light and sends the emitted light from among the light receiving elements 16 in the light receiving layer 15 in a direction toward the protecting sheet layer 25. When an image is to be read with reflected light from an original 40, the configuration prevents the light from the surface light source 20 from being reflected by a protecting sheet interface 26 and received by the light receiving elements 16 before being reflected by the original 40, thereby preventing the otherwise resulting increase in noise content in reading an image of the original 40.
