<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To acquire a shooting distance of required measuring accuracy from a focusing lens position. <P>SOLUTION: When a measured shooting distance is to be acquired from a focusing lens position, first a shooting distance is acquired from the focusing lens position at a focal distance f1 at which shooting is being done, and the shortest permissible focal distance matching this shooting distance L1 and the focal distance f1 are compared. When the focal distance f1 is shorter than the shortest permissible focal distance, the shortest permissible focal distance is made a focal distance f2 farther telephoto than the focal distance f1, followed by zooming in onto that focal distance f2. At the focal distance f2, a shooting distance is acquired from the focusing lens position, and this distance is taken as the measurement.
