<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing system which is capable of recording video without compression while effectively utilizing the capacity of a recording part, and does not need any complicated processing program. <P>SOLUTION: A recording and reproducing system comprises: a recording part to record reproduction information; a reproduction processing part to perform reproduction; a compression part to perform compression conversion; and a compression control part to receive instructions about whether to compress the reproduction information which has been reproduction-processed when the reproduction processing is detected to be stopped. The compression control part controls the compression part so as to perform compression conversion the reproduction information to generate compression information when compression is instructed.
