<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve external light extraction from light emitting diodes (LEDs) and in particular to improve light extraction from white LEDs formed from the Group III nitride material system. <P>SOLUTION: A light emitting diode includes a light emitting active structure 21 formed from the Group III nitride material system, a bonding structure 24 supporting the Group III nitride active structure, and a mounting substrate 25 supporting the bonding structure.
