<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a stroboscopic emission signal at appropriate timing even when an electronic front curtain shutter is used. <P>SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus has an imaging element where a plurality of pixels are arranged in a matrix shape in a row direction and a column direction. The apparatus receives light passing through a photographic lens and accumulates charges corresponding to light in the pixels to perform photographing. A vertical scanning circuit 214 controls the electronic front curtain shutter receiving light in the imaging element to sequentially receive light from a first scanning line with the row direction as a horizontal scanning line. An OR gate 217 detects that the electronic front curtain shutter reaches a prescribed scanning line in horizontal scanning lines and outputs a light emission timing signal.
