<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection device that determines whether a STOAR element for performing microwave-assisted recording in a magnetic disk unit is reliably oscillating. <P>SOLUTION: When a STOAR element oscillates upon application of current bias, the element has an increased resistance. In a head IC outputting the current bias, a voltage applied to the STOAR element is detected, and when the voltage increases up to a threshold or greater, determination can be made that the STOAR element is oscillating. Conversely, when the voltage is equal to or below the threshold, determination can be made that the STOAR element is not oscillating. When the voltage reaches a certain threshold or greater and then the resistance falls, determination can be made that the oscillation becomes weak.
