Disclosed are: a catalyst for dimethyl ether production, with which dimethyl ether can be stably produced for a long period of time; a method for producing the catalyst without undergoing a hydrolysis process and a process such as a neutralization precipitation process wherein a solid is precipitated from a liquid; and a method for producing dimethyl ether. Specifically disclosed is a catalyst for dimethyl ether production, which contains 80% by mass or more of alumina in the form of Al2O3 and additionally contains silicon and magnesium. The catalyst for dimethyl ether production is produced by obtaining a starting material powder by mixing an aluminum source, a silicon source and a magnesium source together and then firing the starting material powder. Dimethyl ether is produced by dehydrating methanol in the presence of the catalyst for dimethyl ether production.
