The hand tool has a sleeve (10) connected with a handle (12) and an insert (14) extended in the sleeve, where the insert forms a spreading cone (16) for expanding a shaft locking ring (26). The insert is removed from the sleeve, in order to allow the sliding of the shaft locking ring over the insert. The sleeve forms an installation edge for the shaft locking ring that is widened on the spreading cone. An independent claim is also included for a method for mounting shaft locking rings.
