<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the fuel ignition when carrying out of a plurality of times of pilot injections. <P>SOLUTION: The fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine carries out a plurality of times of pilot injections prior to the main injection into a cylinder. At the plurality of times of the pilot injections, the spray reaching distance is shortened gradually by gradually reducing the fuel injection amount for disposing the sprayed fuel in a plurality of areas.
