<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium which reduces a track width by increasing an exchange coupled magnetic field Hex of a soft magnetic layer and can achieve higher recording density. <P>SOLUTION: A perpendicular magnetic recording medium has a magnetic recording layer 122 for recording a signal and a soft magnetic layer 114 provided below the magnetic recording layer provided on a substrate 110 having a texture formed on the main surface thereof. The texture includes a first texture 110a which is a straight trace facing a fixed direction, and a second texture 110b which is a trace crossing the first texture at a predetermined angle.
