A synthetic corneal tissue comprising human parthenote derived stem cells for use in corneal transplant is disclosed along with methods for the production of such synthetic corneas. Preferably the cells all have homoplasmic (i.e. identical sequence) mitochondrial DNA and have the histological features of epithelium, Bowman's layer, stroma. Descemet's membrane and endothelium.
