A packet compression/decompression system for link control in a mobile communication system and a method thereof are provided to increase the transmission efficiency of a link by suitably adjusting the amount of packets transmitted and received between a BS(Base Station) and a BSC(Base Station Controller). A packet compression/decompression system, which controls the data transmission through a link between a BS(20) and a BSC(30), comprises the first and second compression units(21,31) and the first and second decompression units(22,32). The first compression unit and the first decompression unit are installed in the BS, and the second compression unit and the second decompression unit are installed in the BSC. For forward traffic processing, the second compression unit and the first decompression unit are used. The second compression unit, if payload data are received from a packet core network, adds header information and CRC(Cyclic Redundancy Check) information to the payload data, creates a data packet, and transmits it to the BS. At this moment, the second compression unit determines whether to compress the payload data, based on the length and delay characteristic of the payload data. In the case of compressing the payload data, the second compression unit inserts compression information in the header information. The first decompression unit for forward traffic processing receives the data packet from the BSC, executes CRC on the basis of the CRC information, analyzes the header information, and transmits the payload data to a mobile station. In this case, the first decompression unit decompresses, based on the compression information contained in the header information, and transmits the decompressed payload data. |
