A safety line 2 comprising a kemmantle structure having a metallic inner core 20 and an over braided protective sheath 21. The safety line may be used in a fall arrest system that uses a safety line drum mounted for rotation, the safety line drum being stored substantially entirely wound onto the drum. The core maybe steel wire which may be stainless steel and galvanised. The over braided sheath maybe woven and it may be a para-aramid or polyester. The outer sheath and core maybe secured at the ends of the safety line by swaging and unsecured to each other over the majority of the length of the safety line.
