This application addresses the problem of identifying when a patch cable has been incorrectly connected. The patch cable comprises multiple twisted pair wires. Generally there will be many patch cables and alien crosstalk between the cables. If there was no crosstalk then incorrect connections could be identified by transmitting a first test signal into a first end of a first cable and monitoring an opposite end of a second cable to determine if the test signal is received. Successful reception would indicate that the first cable and the second cable are in fact one and the same. However, there is the possibility that the second cable actually received a crosstalk signal rather than a direct signal, thus giving a false result. The applicants have overcome this problem by developing a test to distinguish between a direct signal and a crosstalk signal on the basis of a characteristic of the received test signal, such as the amplitude profile as a function of frequency. |
