Non-conductive substrate 22, preferably flexible, has first surface 26 onto which user 34 can apply a fingerprint. Fingerprint sensing circuit 18 is applied to a second surface of the substrate, opposite the first. A navigation device (e.g. 50, fig. 5) is positioned in association with the substrate — adjacent to or mounted thereon or with the substrate overlaid on a surface of the device — such that the device can be manipulated through the substrate. Typically the device is for navigating a GUI and may comprise one or more of: pointing stick, button, switch, joystick, wheel, directional pad, touchpad, optical. sensor or trackball. The navigation device may be electrically connected to the fingerprint sensing circuit, which circuit may be configured to process signals from the device. There may be a plurality of fingerprint sensing elements located on the second surface of the substrate, electrically connected to but physically decoupled from the fingerprint sensing circuit. The plurality of fingerprint sensing elements is preferably arranged to form a dual-line imager that may be configured to both read a fingerprint and to navigate a GUI. |
