PURPOSE: An area recognition apparatus of a portable terminal and method thereof are provided to reduce installation costs of an indoor recognition apparatus by enabling a user to confirm area information at indoor. CONSTITUTION: An area confirmation unit(102) includes a fingerprint collection unit(113), an image acquisition unit(117), a storage unit(119), a fingerprint comparing unit(121), and an image comparing unit(123). The storage unit stores a first image and a first earth magnetic filed component. The finger print comparing unit compares the first earth magnetic filed component and a second earth magnetic field component. The finger print comparing unit grasps the location of a portable terminal. The image comparing unit grasps a final location by comparing the first image with the second image.
