PURPOSE: An image forming apparatus is provided to reduce the length of a middle transferring body without increasing the length of non-image area. CONSTITUTION: A contact member(10) contacts a middle transferring body and is separated from the middle transferring body. A control unit(85) moves the middle transferring body from a spaced state. When the contact member contacts the middle transferring body, the control unit executes the operation of a measuring mode based on the change of the detected current. The control unit contacts the contact member in a non image region.
